Savata Mali[edit | edit source]
A 12-century Hindu saint, and a follower of Lord Vithoba, Savata Mali is a respected figure among the Varkaris in Maharashtra. He was born in 1250 in a humble family in Arangaon village near Modnimb, Solapur district, Maharashtra. His life was by devotion and simplicity.
Early Life and Marriage[edit | edit source]
His grandfather, Devu Mali, moved to this village due to financial difficulties. Though Savata grew up in poverty, his parents Parasu and Nangitaba instilled deep religious values in him who were devoted followers of the Bhagwat tradition.
After marrying Janabai, a deeply religious woman from a nearby village they led a fulfilling life filled with piety and spirituality. It is believed that Savata who spent most of his time singing praises of Lord Vithoba and tending to bullocks was blessed with a divine visit from Vithoba himself as he was unable to undertake the journey to the main temple. Savata Mali’s spiritual roots helped him experience divine in almost everything around him be that daily tasks or even in fruits and vegetables. He was so deeply rooted in Bhakti that it affected his personal life as well. It is said that once because of his deep involvement with his spiritual connection and devotional singing he neglected his in-laws but later made it up with his calming effect and gentle words.

Till date Savata Mali remains a figure to be revered among Varkari saints who believed in equality amidst the backdrop of caste and social hierarchies. Devotees across Maharashtra and beyond are still influenced by his devotional songs and teachings which also forma n integral part of Varkari literature.
He led by example by demonstrating that devotion doesn’t require complex and grand rituals. One can find solace and peace in everyday life. His simple faith and humility and lasting legacy in Bhakti tradition encourages all his followers to find God’s presence everywhere. His life story is an everlasting guide to spiritual seekers.
